So, that solves the spiked chain issue. Unfotunately, since it would take quickdraw to switch back and forth from reach to double weapon (DM's judgement), I think I'm going to take a pass. I love the idea of wielding a spiked chain and its benefits but three feats is just too much for anyone but a fighter.
aristotle, can I have a masterwork flail or heavy flail
instead of the masterwork longsword? Either gets Jarl the trip and disarm bonus which fit well with the character's chosen occupation. Also, ranger's are not proficient with medium armor, so I'll take a downgrade on the chainmail to a chain shirt and hopefully get the difference in gold (or maybe a little gold and that masterwork heavy flail). Did anyone say, "Let's make a deal."
BTW How does advancement work with a character that has racial HD. Does Jarl advance to second when he gets enough xp or does he need third level XP to get to second level? The whole ECL thing confuses me.

racial hd works that to achieve the next level you need to have enough xp to go to the (RHD + Class Levels) level so say you are level 1 cleric with 2 racial hit die and a level adjustment of 1, you would need enough experience to go to fifth level to become a second level cleric.

So since the gnoll has 2d8+2 HD and a level adjustment of +1, Jarl won't gain second level til everyone else is fifth?

That would be correct, unless chris rules otherwise, dm always has last say.

The gnoll I posted doesn't have racial hit dice, just the level adjustment. You'll be at 2nd level when you have 3 levels of experience points. Essentially you are a gnoll 1/ranger 1 at the moment.

Jarl
He's tradded in his MW longsword for a MW heavy flail and his chainmail for a chain shirt. Anyone who makes a casual scan of him sees that he's also carrying a sap, truncheon and shortsword. He's also purchased a bag of caltrops which he carries on his belt.

For seven nights I dared not sleep
and seven lives I dared not spare
I looked among the fetid locks
For my Sharry-go-marry
In the seven spires I climbed
and in the seven lairs I spied
I looked among the wretched magpies
For my Sharry-go-marry
-
Sharry-Go-Marry and the Bloodied Bride-Groom
, Varagio the Younger, 1231VR
For two fulls weeks, heavy rains had lashed the Black Coast, a late winter Sou'easter. The rains had set all Falan on edge, but none more so than Finner Dulgado. Every day of rain cost him more gold than he cared to say, and the 'Schaaln sea-witch over in Lorewake had predicated another week - at least - the cold, angry rain. He slipped another marva leaf from his leafbox and began to chew, the minty bitter juice doing little to calm his mood.
The broken step on the stairs in the hallway creaked. "Finally," Finner called out, not turned from his sullen ruminations in the window. "I sent for you three hours ago! If you think this won't come out of your fee, you have less sense than a Seely."
Something was happening across the Canal, in the Gryffinaerie Tower. A bright flash of red-orange light briefly changed the gray pallet of the rainy city. A fire spell? Why would someone be casting combat spells in Lady E-
"Arrrhhhh!" Finner screamed. A horrible pain exploded simultaneously in his lower back and stomach. Blood was gushing around a thin wafer of silver that had suddenly appeared just below his diaphragm. Another fiery flash in the neighboring tower, the blade was wrenched out of his body and plunged in again. Finner felt about his belt for his pistol but couldn't undo the clasp on the holster's strap. He couldn't focus his eyes; a gray and blue blur flew out of the windows across the Canal and fell out of the sky. Finner sank to his knees. There, got the pistol out. Was it loaded? He couldn't remember. Where was the blade? It wasn't in him anymore. A whooshing sound from behind...
---
The group assembled in the warehouse in Granite Canal was a motley one. A gnoll leaned on a support column, pensive and sniffing. A rather dashing young man was making small talk with a...a vaguely Oriental woman who seemed entirely uninterested in the conversation. On top of a wooden crate, a man who seemed lost in shadows, though no shadows were about him, sat sharpening his blade. In a corner, a half-orc had seized the moment to take a nap. And on a crossbeam above them all, and most unusual of all, a rethari crouched, her blond tail curling and uncurling as she reassembled a collection of cogs and springs into...something.
I could not see myself belonging to this madman's collective, no more than I could see any of them belonging together either, for that matter. A strong desire to turn around immediately and leave this place was held back by the promise I'd made to Rya. How working for a tradecoster was supposed to keep the Betharians or the Warden from finding me, I knew not. But Rya insisted this was the best way, save of course for joining her in the Garrot.
"Um, hello?" I started. Most of them looked up - or down - at me. "I'm Ca...I'm Brother Pare. Finner sent me over here."
The rethari leapt from the rafter and floated gracefully down in front of me.
"You'rrre the cappitan?" She asked, her accent far more exotic than I had imagined. They said most catpeople had settled in Viscay after the Cataclysm of Chaldon, and I could only assume that's where she'd come from. But how she had managed to end up in Falan, the Sanrei'elle alone could know.
"Oh, well, no. I'm not the captain or anything. Finner said they needed a healer, you know, in case of accidents and the like."
Someone snorted, maybe the half-orc or the gnoll.
"Well, if 'e is not zhe capitan, zhen when will Finner send one?" the olive-skinned woman asked me. I could only shrug.
"Finner didn't say anything about that to me. All I know is --"
The heavy wood door behind me slammed open. Out of habit, I dove behind a nearby crate and started praying for a spell of warding.
"Praise Vanya, you're here!" a high-pitched man's voice sang out. I peeked my head around the crate. A lanky man I'd seen in the Coster's offices the day before was standing in the doorway, rain-soaked and winded. The rest of my...companions...made their ways to him. I think I'd heard him addressed as Yuther. Or maybe that was just 'you there'...Finner talked quickly.
The man, Gillepy , explained to the group, Finner had been murdered, his residency ransacked. Gillepy wanted us to go there immediately and see with we could figure out who did this. I noticed he was looking straight at the gnoll when he said this. This warehouse in Granite Street Canal was at least an hour's journey from Finner's place in Carrowine.

Jarl walks past the man towards the door. When he reaches it, he stops and turns saying, "you coming Gillepy." Then without waiting to see if any of the others were coming he turned and walked out the door.
Along the way, he asked only one question, "Was anything taken?"

"Aww, and i was starting to like ole Finner..." still rubbing the sleep from his eyes. "I was looking forward to our upcoming voyage, guess that'll be post-poned now."
Looking toward the cowardly creature that leapt behind the crates, "Are you always this skiddish?"
The half-orc gives a half-hearted chuckle as he pushes through the croud, following close behind the gnoll, "Lets see if we can find out what happened, perhaps luck will be on our side tonight..." as he unconsciously touches the scar just below his hairline.

Zo straps his great sword to his back, and without word makes for the door with with a cold, determined look.

Gillepy looks a bit heartened to see the would-be crew harkening to his call.
"This way, quickly! I've got a gondola waiting for us."
The man turned back into the rain. A fiery bolt struck him on the left side of his head, crumpling him like a bag of millet.

At the arrival of our reason for waiting, he turns to the newcomer then bow slightly from the shoulders, "Mi Lady, it was a rare pleasure, however business awaits, though it pains me to put business before the pleasure of your conversation".
Turning, He [Nic] strolls towards the door, behind such impressively large individuals, Casting a quick glance at the nervous figure, behind the crate, Nic conceals his distaste admirably, or so he would sday if asked.
A Half-Orc! A Gnoll! and more! Such splendid company, heroics await!

Jarl starts by dragging Gillepy to some cover and calling for the healer. Then he looks around to see who's out there. His strategy is to try to knock someone out, maybe someone who will be injured by one of the other party members. He uses his heavy flail (attack Bonus +7) intil he's likely to be able to knock someone out. Then he switches to his truncheon (attack bonus +6). In Ranged combat he uses his light crossbow +1 (attack bonus +4, damage 1d8+1). He makes sure to take a good sniff to see if he can catch a scent.
OOC Oops you said 10 dice .. oh well, it's done. Use them as you will.
